What about Fido?

OK so you have a beloved pet and you are wondering "How will I be able to go on vacation without my pet?"

Who is going to take care of my dog, cat, birds or other animal? You do not want to put them in a kennel while your on vacation but yet you need to have someone take good care of them for you. Home exchange to the rescue again!

Your pets may make some new friends and you get to enjoy a guilt free vacation. Leaving your pet in a kennel can be both costly and guilt ridden, but if your home exchange partners agree to watch over your pets too, then you have a built in pet sitter.

But remember always be a good exchanger and follow these simple tips.

  • Make sure you discuss your pets BEFORE the home exchange.
  • Leave detailed instructions for your exchange partners about your animals needs and habits.
  • Make sure you leave an ample supply of food for your furry friends.
  • If your pets have any special needs make sure to leave instructions.
  • Leave the number to the veterinarian along with all the other important numbers.

You will find a sample agreement form in the members section which will help make your exchange with pets easier.

But remember, always have a backup plan. Remember your home exchange partners may spend a night away from your home. Yes it can happen, even with a home exchange you may find yourself in a hotel for a night or two. How you ask, when the savings and comforts of a home exchange far out weigh a hotel bill? Well consider the fact that you may live within a couple hundred miles of a popular tourist attraction like Disney World. Your home exchange partners may want to visit Mickey and his friends and due to the distance and fun they are having they may elect to spend the night instead of returning to your home. Here is where the backup plan pays off. I know my cats are pretty independent but a dog needs to be walked so they can use the bathroom.

If you go over these details and even include them in the pet agreement it still does not help poor Fido when he needs to go outside. Leaving the number of a friend or family member who can help out in a pinch is always a good idea. So even if your guests do find something that keeps them away too long you and your pets will be covered.
